Tired + 100 Theme Challenge.
I don’t think I’ve slept well since we got the kittens, for several reasons. The first is that they sleep with us, so I’m afraid that I’ll roll over and smush one of them in my sleep (alternatively, roll over and end up with a face full of claws). The second is that they like to wake me up every few hours, just so that I’ll pet/play with/pay attention to them. It’s making me cranky and impersonable. And tired. Beyond tired, even. And thus I am having a hard time doing anything that isn’t ‘get home from work, try to sleep’.
However, I think I’m going to try something different. I know I thought about doing the 100 Theme Challenge quite a long time ago (though I’m not sure it was this version, things look a bit different from what I remember), but it seemed like quite the task for someone with so much on their plate. As I recently cleared my plate of all but one project, I feel like I’ll be able to actually do this (if not all of it, a large chunck of it). It could be a really fun vehicle for some neat art, and I’d be highly tempted to make an art book out of it if I managed to complete it.
Anyhow, I’ve been putting off finishing a new page of Strike the Earth all damn week, and this is mostly because I’m contemplating the best way to transfer it. I only have three pages done, so no huge deal there, but I want to at least have something resembling the old layout when I do. Comics Press is a nice program, but getting the hang of it has been hard, to say the least, on the test site I’ve been picking at for the past few weeks. I’ll see what I can do as soon as I pick out a domain name, if I don’t just toss it all on a subdomain off of this one. Ah well. Guess I’ll go hunting now.

Pictures!

Crazily enough, took me the better part of last night, but I’ve got most of what I want viewable up under the galleries tab. The gallery plugin I’m using is a bit confusing, but I imagine I’ll be able to get used to it. It also sets itself up in a way where I would be tempted to use it for a comic site. I’ll be testing it out once this place is up and running and I can start transferring everything away from Smackjeeves.
I recently picked up a book called ‘Drawing Words Writing Pictures‘ that I feel is going to help me greatly. I recommend it to pretty much anyone who wants to make comics, webcomic or not. It’s extremely informative, and incudes exercises to help you develop in many different areas. I’m thinking of trying to get a group together to actually work from it (the book suggests that), and if not, I can definitely work on my own (especially since I just picked up a season of CSI that I didn’t own…I never realised just how much I would miss cable for when I draw in the living room, which is all of the time).
Of course, that’s if I can pull myself away from all these distractions. Like World of Warcraft (I’m actually a casual player), the new Final Fantasy Tactics game for the DS coming out in a few days (I’ve played over 280 hours in the older one, oh god, I’m so addicted) and any other number of things.
I might not be too busy where fixing things up for the next few days, though. I need to make like…250 buttons for my sister’s respective sports teams. it’s a lot of work, and methinks I have to go ink cartridge hunting tomorrow. Anyhow, I’m off to the Ottawa Chicken/Rib Fest! Wish me

Well then.
I’ve had this webspace for 5 odd years, and until recently, I’ve never felt the need to use it for anything more than hotlinking images. I guess my recent change in opinion on the subject matter stems from a trip I went on last month. I spoke as a webcomics expert on a panel with Lar (from Least I Could Do and Looking for Group), and got a chance to speak with him and get some input on a picture of mine (to be fair, I did it in the hallway on lined paper because the rest of my art stuff was in the trunk of my car, half way across town), and the whole thing left me thinking.
I just don’t feel like I’m doing everything that I’m capable of. Hell, I know I’m not. The closest I’ve ever felt in terms of ‘doing what I am capable of’ is what little I’ve done for Strike The Earth!, my Dwarf Fortress fancomic. While I can admit that I really love both RANSOM and MIDheaven, I feel like the audience I’m catering to is waning and that I can only go so far on Smackjeeves. I’m not the only person who feels this way–that I know. This is why I have made a very hard decision.
I’ve decided to put both RANSOM and MIDheaven on hold, indefinitely. I’ll be removing them from Smackjeeves entirely until I’ve made a decision on what I’ll be doing with both of them. I want to say that I’ll end up making illustrated novels of both of them, and yet I don’t know if I’m capable of such a feat, so I can’t promise anything, at least not in the near future, and definitely not by myself. I may decide to hold a small fanfiction contest for anyone wanting to help me undertake these tasks, but for now I’ve got nothing solid planned.
Strike The Earth will be moving to it’s own DotCom, getting a page overhaul and will (hopefully) be gaining a crew who will be not only helping to maintain the site, but who will also be posting tutorials, tips and more, making it more of a DF fansite than strictly a webcomic.
As for what I’ll be doing aside from maintaining STE, I’ve got a few projects lined up with the ever-awesome Gibson Twist, writer of Our Time in Eden and artist/writer of Pictures of You, as well as a few projects being headed by Cory Brown, my husband and writer for RANSOM. On top of that, I’ll be gearing this website up to act as an actual website that will host my portfolio, art galleries and blog.
I want to thank all of you for sticking by me for all of these years–thank you for the fanart, the comments, the critiques. Wish me luck!
